About Me

I am a Welsh composer, currently studying on the masters programme at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark, with tuition from Simon Steen-Andersen and Niels Rønsholdt. From 2012-2016, I studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where I received tuition from Tansy Davies, Huw Watkins and Gary Carpenter as well as Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Oliver Knussen.

During my studies, I have had a number of opportunities to have pieces played, including the performance of 'Aftermath' by the Aurora Trio at the Spitalfields Festival and the performance of 'Two Pianos' in Perth Australia. In addition to this, I have had chamber music performed at composer's platform concerts and a chance to have pieces workshopped including my Trombone Concertino and pieces written for the Academy's Manson ensemble. In December 2014, I won the Ty Cerdd composers competition with my piece 'Four Variations and Reactions on Eramu in Campu' for brass dectet. The piece was premiered at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama by members of the college and the Welsh National Opera and had repeat performances by members of the North Wales Youth orchestra, conducted by Ben Gernon in August 2015. In February 2018, I took part in a workshop with the Esbjerg ensemble which culminated in a performance of my piece 'Buttons Down the Back' both in Esbjerg and in Copenhagen conducted by Rei Munakata.

Music has been an important part of my life from an early age when I started learning to play clarinet and piano. I started composing seriously after joining the junior department of the Royal Northern College of Music where I had lessons from Emily Howard. Here, I had the opportunity to have a number of pieces performed by large and small chamber ensembles. In my final year, the JRNCM Symphony Orchestra premiered my piece 'Kernel Panic' in June 2012. Following this, I had my piece 'Four Haikus' highly commended in the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers Competition which was performed at the Royal College of Music in August 2012.

My music takes inspiration from an eclectic range of sources. Composers that have particularly influenced my compositional style include György Ligeti, Edgard Varèse, Gerald Barry and Harrison Birtwistle. I am also influenced by various popular music genres and electronic music genres. I am interested in the diverse folk musics of Europe and have incorporated elements of folk music from Ireland, Georgia and Corsica into some of my recent compositions.
